What is a Palatal Expander?

A palatal expander is a special orthodontic appliance that “expands” (or widens) your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. We will instruct you about when and how to adjust your palatal expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and prevent regression. The main purpose is to provide enough space for erupting teeth and prevent crowded teeth.
